MUSICAL WORLD XXIII

The Victoria School Concert Band will be holding a night concert on the June 12 in 7.30pm. It will be held in the Victoria Concert Hall.

Victoria School Concert Band had garnered Gold in the recent SYF Competition of Concert Band and performed in several occasions. Under the baton of Mr Tan Beng Wee, the band will wow you down with its various pieces and numbers that may sound intimidating to the ears of other musicians.

Pieces Most Probably Playing:
Inn of Sixth Happiness - A long touching piece played for SYF
Merry Widow - Another SYF piece that exposes the band to different tempo and feel
Symphonic Movement - Our SYF piece that will bring shivers
American Graffiti XVI Oldies - Old tunes that will bring you back to the oldies

The Alumni Band will also be there with its dedicated past batches of Victorians. Despite their busy schedules, they had made time to perform in the concert.

Come along and be a part of this concert. For Victorians, please support the Band and the School by attending this event. Your support will be great to continue our pursuit for the excellence of Music Performance.

Tickets available at $10 from the nearest Main Band Member or preferably you would like to drop your order along with your email to either me or Sherman.

You will need to pass your name and contact number so that we can refund you if the unexpected happened.

Please support us!

SYF 2009

Congratulations to the whole band, we had attained the Gold award!

Never mind the adjudicators, our performance had reached the peak! I am sure we are there not for the award, we are there for the music making as musicians representing VSCB.

I would like to thank Jason for helping with the section NOT only in the musical aspects of Overture 2 but in the ways of how you hold your instrument, how you project, how you breathe in and how you express out your tone.

Remember: Colour, Depth, Resonance.

Do not forget as the technical aspects that we had worked on. We had achieved Gold, now we have to proof that we are worthy of it. Musical World is just around the corner.

Do your long notes and technical drills. If you don't practise smart, you will suffer terribly.

And in 2011, I want the juniors who will be leading the band to snatch back the Gold with Honours that abruptly disappeared from our grasp since 2007.

For VSCB is where dreams come true and music lives on.

Nan Chiau Exchange

Today, we just had an exchange with Nan Chiau Wind Orchestra. For Benson, it is his first exchange. For all, it is a prepration for SYF and an eye-opener to other band that is almost or as capable as us or better.

Effort and hard work can't be digressed any further. It is essential for being the best that you can. It is not by only reciting the whole piece of Symphonic but technique.

For example, you are a pianist. You have exams on practical piano and you will be needed to play 3 pieces. It will be absolutely a waste if you only know how to play each of the three pieces of your exams but if a foreign piece is introduced, you black-outed.

Likewise, you need exposure to good sound and be a all-rounder in techiques. You need to do long notes for at least 1 hour a day. Don't just spam a scale, but play the scale. t just wack the piece, play the piece. Don't squeeze that top Bb, play it with a singing voice. Don't vibrate out the pedal Bb, make it robust and round like a Tuba.

You need to not only understand but apply. Honestly, I am tired repeating myself during sectionals. You need to stay consistent and keep improving.

Now reflect. Are we really good? Are you good? Did you do a good job? How can you improve? By what means will you improve?

Nan Hua's Bella Notte II

Firstly, I would like to congratulate my fellow section mates on the good performance. Yes, we might slip here and there due to the lack of focus and the intensity of the nervousness, but we pulled through it all. From the crazy melodious 10 bars of dialog in Symphonic Dances to the continuous rhythmic pattern which is third in importance in Postcard from Singapore.

To Sec 1s, I would like you to come down more often. Do more technical exercises provided by the Symphonic Band Techniques. Improve your tonguing and diaphragm support especially and work on volume and intonation. A good tone must be achieved by the end of this year.

If the pieces tire you off, I can lead other pieces that you can sight-read and challenge yourself. It is good exposure. For example, Sherman and I tried out many pieces that we will never play again, like Hanover Festival, Alvamar Overture and Songs of Earth, Water, Fire and Sky.

To Sec 2s, like myself, just improve your rhythmic pulse and techniques that requires more endurance and experience. For example, the focus of airflow to the centre and continuous diaphragm support. Sherman, if you read this, we need to discuss how to train the future novice euphonists that will be coming in next year. Be aware that I will not be there for Tuesday practice.

Remember, practise hard and smart. And someone read the guides and editor's notes on the Individual logbook! The only person who read it was probably the tubist sec 3s and Cheng Yu!
